Happy Birthday, Steve Howe
Turning 68 today is one of the greatest prog-rock guitarists of all time, but don't you dare begin to think that Steve Howe isn't capable of shifting musical genres at the drop of a hat: he's got guitar skills which extend well beyond what you can hear on The Yes Album…or any of the other Yes albums, for that matter. But, of course, you already know that if you read our interview with him last month.
Since beginning his musical career in the 1960s, Howe has been a part of such bands as The Syndicats, Tomorrow, Yes, Asia, GTR, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, and Explorers Club, worked with artists ranging from Lou Reed to Queen to Sinead O'Connor, and, of course, he's got a heck of a solo discography as well. Indeed, it's so substantial that if you've never attempted to delve into it, it could well prove an intimidating prospect, so - blatant plug alert! - you might want to consider the new two-disc, 33-song anthology of his work that we've just released. (Hey, there are worse ways to celebrate the guy's birthday, y'know?)
For our part, we've put together a playlist featuring some of his solo work as well as a variety of tracks from throughout his career, hitting a number of the bands of which he's been a member as well as some songs he's been on by other artists. Go have a listen, and while you're doing so, let's all hope that Steve Howe will have a happy birthday.
