The Flaming Lips, SEEING THE UNSEEABLE

When it comes to Rhino’s release schedule, you never know what you’re going to get, but you always know you’re going to get something good. This week, we’re offering up so much good stuff that we can’t even preview it all in a single day, so we’re spreading it out over the course of the week, and even at that we’re tackling three separate releases in this one post.

So, yeah, it’s a pretty good week…

David Bowie:

We’ve got three different Bowie releases arriving on Friday, starting with the CD and digital debut of WELCOME TO THE BLACKOUT (LIVE LONDON ’78), which features performances recorded at Earl’s Court on June 30 and July 1, 1978. If you’re a vinyl freak, then you may well have taken advantage of the opportunity to pick up our limited-edition triple-LP reissue for this year’s Record Store Day, but for those who prefer the aforementioned other mediums, now’s your chance to enjoy this BLACKOUT. Next up is a vinyl reissue of Bowie’s soundtrack to the 1981 film CHRISTIANE F. – WIR KINDER VON BAHNOFF ZOO, which hasn’t been available as an LP in 30 years, and to make it even more awesome, it’s now being pressed on red vinyl. Please also note, however, that it’s being made available strictly at “brick and mortar” retail stores, so go hit your friendly neighborhood record store on Friday! And while you’re there, you can ask about the last of this week’s Bowie reissues and the other “brick and mortar”-only item: DAVID BOWIE IN BERTOLT BRECHT’S BAAL, a 5-song EP available as a 10” vinyl reissue.

Here’s the track listing for all three of these items, but stay tuned after you read those, because next we’re talking about Chicago!

Chicago:

If you’re a PBS fan, then you may already be aware that Chicago went home to – you guessed it – Chicago last year and visited the studios of WTTW, where they performed every single song from their classic album CHICAGO II. Yes, every song. Even the ones that fell out of their set list years ago. If you’ve seen the special and you’ve wondered how one might get a copy of that performance, then you’re in luck: this Friday, you’ll be able to pick it up on either CD or, if you want the whole package, a CD/DVD set.  Actually, if you really, really want the whole package, there’s one more option: CHICAGO II: COLLECTOR'S EDTION, which comes with the Soundstage performance on CD and DVD, as well as the original Chicago II album remixed by acclaimed producer Steven Wilson on both CD and double-LP.

You can find the track listing below, but after you’ve given it a once-over, stick around and find out about the Flaming Lips reissues we’ve got coming out tomorrow, too!

The Flaming Lips:

It’s a good year to be a Flaming Lips fan, as you probably already know if you’re one of the many who picked up SCRATCHING THE DOOR: THE FIRST RECORDINGS OF THE FLAMING LIPS, but this Friday we really kick things up a notch with the release of the 6-CD set SEEING THE UNSEEABLE: THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS OF THE FLAMING LIPS 1986-1990.

Before you ask, no, they didn’t actually release six albums between 1986 and 1990. Two of those discs feature rarities, however, so they’re chock full of Flaming goodness.
