Now Available: David Bowie, Who Can I Be Now? [1974-1976]

Two days from now, we’ll be celebrating the one-year anniversary of when we released the David Bowie box set FIVE YEARS 1969-1973, which – as its title suggests – includes the material that Bowie released during the five-year period from 1969 to 1973. Since we all know that he didn’t just up and retire at the end of ’73, it was only a matter of time before we released a follow-up to this set, and as of today, that time has finally come.

Regrettably, the new set is not called FIVE MORE YEARS, first and foremost because it only covers three years, but don’t get cocky: it’s not called THREE YEARS, either.

In stores now, WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974-1976) is a 12-CD set or a 13-LP set or one big, fat digital download which contains the following material:
DIAMOND DOGS DAVID LIVE (both the original mix and the 2005 mix) YOUNG AMERICANS STATION TO STATION (both the original mix and the 2010 mix) THE GOUSTER LIVE NASSAU COLISEUM ‘76 RE:CALL 2

Naturally, you’ll want immediate identification of the two albums in the mix that don’t immediately ring a bell, and we’re happy to provide.

First of all, THE GOUSTER was never officially released as a complete album, but the material contained within its grooves (or digital encoding) was produced by Tony Visconti, recorded at Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound in 1974, and was mixed and mastered before Bowie headed to New York to start work on the album that would ultimately become YOUNG AMERICANS. You’ll recognize most, if not all, of the tracks on THE GOUSTER, as they’ve all ended up seeing release somewhere or other, but there are three mixes that are making their debut on the set.

As for RE:CALL 2, it is – not unlike the RE:CALL compilation on FIVE YEARS – a collection of single versions and B-sides that’s exclusive to the set. While there’s nothing here that hasn’t been made available somewhere at some point, there are a few tracks that have never been made available on CD before, which straight away makes it an exemplary collection of hard-to-find material.

Lastly, there’s the book. It’s 128 pages in the CD box and 84 pages in the vinyl set (one’s bigger than the other, you know), and it includes rare and previously-unpublished photos of Bowie from a number of noted photographers, along with historical press clippings and technical notes about the albums found within the set.
