New Order MOVEMENT Album Cover

On April 5, Rhino will be releasing a box set of New Order’s debut album, MOVEMENT, which was originally released in November 1981. Prior to that, however, the band released a handful of 12” singles, but the songs on those singles didn’t find their way onto the album. To echo those events, we’re going to re-release these singles in advance of our reissue of MOVEMENT, and the first two will be hitting brick-and-mortar and virtual record store shelves tomorrow.

Which two? Glad you asked, partially because we live to serve, but also because the two singles are actually the same, except that they aren’t?

Confused yet? Let us explain.

"Ceremony (version 1)" – Recorded at Eastern Artists Recordings in East Orange, New Jersey during the US visit the previous September, this might well have been Joy Division’s next single, were it not for the band’s lead singer, Ian Curtis, committing what his bandmates have generally referred to as “the dirty deed.” Instead, it became New Order’s first single.

"Ceremony (version 2)" – This is a re-recorded version of the song, one which features Gillian Gilbert in the lineup. It has a different sleeve, but the B-side remains the same.
