Rhino's Got You Covered Album Cover

It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we?

  • The Mighty Lemon Drops, “Another Girl, Another Planet” (1991): This Other Ones cover by the band definitely made its debut in ’91, but we’re not sure if it first turned up as a B-side to the band’s “Unkind” single or as a track on the Sire Records compilation JUST SAY ANYTHING. Not that it really matters.

  • Tori Amos, “Real Men” (2001): For her covers album STRANGE LITTLE GIRLS, Amos tackled a number of songs that one might not have expected her to try her hand at. In addition to this Joe Jackson tune, she also offers renditions of tracks by everyone from Depeche Mode and the Boomtown Rats to Slayer. You can say she doesn’t have diverse tastes in music.

  • Johnny Lee, “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” (1984): Best known to most for his hit single “Looking for Love (In All the Wrong Places),” Lee was one of those ‘80s artists who wasn’t afraid to take current pop songs and countrify them just enough to make ‘em potentially hit onto country radio. In addition to this Elton John track, Lee also covered “Workin’ for a Livin’” by Huey Lewis and the News, turning it into the title track of the album.

  • The Sweet Inspirations, “To Love Somebody” (1968): This ‘60s R&B group are probably best known nowadays because their lineup featured Cissy Houston, a.k.a. Whitney’s mom. This soulful Bee Gees cover can be found on their third studio album, WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE.
