Welcome To Sky Valley (Album of the Day)
Tuesday, May 17, 2016
Kyuss was formed in the late-1980s in Palm Desert, California, and the heat and isolation of that birthplace forged one of the greatest bands in stoner rock. Following a pair of independent releases, the quartet signed to Elektra Records for WELCOME TO SKY VALLEY, a powerful combination of crushing metal riffs and spacey neo-psychedelic excursions. The ten tracks on the album proper (in best mid-'90s fashion, there's also a hidden track) are grouped into three epic suites to encourage start-to-finish listening, though with songs as compelling as “Gardenia” and “Demon Cleaner,” it's tough to resist hitting the replay button. Before founding Queens of the Stone Age, Josh Homme manned the guitars in Kyuss, and today we'll cue up WELCOME TO SKY VALLEY to celebrate his birthday.

Canciones De Mi Padre (Remastered) (Album of the Day)
Monday, May 16, 2016
Linda Ronstadt was born in Tucson, Arizona and heard plenty of traditional Mexican music growing up, so 1987's CANCIONES DE MI PADRE was a natural for her. As with the three albums of standards that preceded it, this collection of “songs of my father” harks back to an earlier era - though Ronstadt's crystalline vocals are so well suited to these ranchera classics that they sound like they were written for her. World-renowned band Mariachi Vargas accompany the singer on 13 of her Spanish-language favorites including “Tú Sólo Tú,” “Por Un Amor” and “La Charreada.” A Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album Grammy winner and a double-Platinum hit, CANCIONES DE MI PADRE (reissued last month alongside sequel MAS CANCIONES) is both a loving tribute to Linda Ronstadt's heritage and a magnificent introduction to the music of Mexico.

John Michael Montgomery (Album of the Day)
Friday, May 13, 2016
Kentucky-born singer John Michael Montgomery dominated the country charts in the 1990s, beginning with his multi-platinum debut and an even more successful follow-up – which raised expectations even higher for the performer's self-titled third album. Yet JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY proved equal to the challenge, spinning off five hit singles including Country No.1s “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)” and “I Can Love You Like That” (which All-4-One took to the pop Top Ten). Polished production by Scott Hendricks and a raft of top session players provide the perfect setting for the man's matchless vocals, which are by turns heartfelt and high-spirited. JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY is among the most enjoyable modern country albums you're likely to hear, and like its predecessors was a multi-platinum smash.

Wild Gift (Album of the Day)
Thursday, May 12, 2016
L.A. punk rock trailblazers X built on the success of their seminal debut to create an equally impressive follow-up in WILD GIFT. Like its predecessor, the 1981 Slash collection was produced by Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, who focuses the power of the quartet on one of the best sets of songs John Doe and Exene Cervenka ever wrote, “We're Desperate,” “Adult Books” and “White Girl” among them. Released 35 years ago this month, WILD GIFT's virtues have become increasingly evident with time – critic Robert Christgau placed the set among his five favorites from the 1980s, and Rolling Stone included it in their list of the 500 greatest albums ever made - and it still packs a punch that would knock most contemporary bands back to Tuesday.

Gentlemen (Deluxe) (Album of the Day)
Wednesday, May 11, 2016
Relationships have rarely been dissected with a scalpel as sharp as the one Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli wields on GENTLEMEN. The Cincinnati alternative band's fourth studio album is a harrowing journey through emotional wreckage that you won't soon forget; as striking as individual songs like “Debonair,” “What Jail Is Like” and the title track are, their cumulative effect is devastating. Rhino's 21st anniversary edition of GENTLEMEN shows the indie landmark the respect it deserves, adding all the original demos for the album, single B-sides and three songs recorded live for KTCL radio. This is Greg Dulli's birthday, and we'll mark the occasion by giving The Afghan Whigs' best studio set another spin.

Three (Album of the Day)
Tuesday, May 10, 2016
With a dynamic combination of music, comedy and technology that's made them part of the pop culture zeitgeist, Blue Man Group has entertained more than 35 million people worldwide since 1991. To mark their 25th anniversary, the colorful trio have just released their third studio album, the aptly-titled THREE. Featuring 14 new instrumental tracks, the collection is a snapshot of the constantly expanding world of the Blue Man Group, drawing from their legendary live show and adding sonic explorations from a wide array of newly developed instruments (including the “Snorkelbone” and the “Chimeulum”). Tribal drumming, soaring melodies and elements of EDM are evident throughout the album, with Brazilian percussionist Marivaldo Dos Santos, vibraphonist Yusuke Yamamoto and DJ Mike Relm joining in on the fun. They may keep their mouths shut, but Blue Man Group speaks volumes with the playful and inventive THREE..

Speak & Spell (2006 Remastered) (Album of the Day)
Monday, May 9, 2016
British synthpop heroes Depeche Mode made a strong debut in 1981 with SPEAK & SPELL, reaching the U.K. Top Ten. All but two of the songs were written by Vince Clarke, who departed after this album to form Yazoo (and eventually Erasure) and who sets an upbeat tone here, with hooks and melodies prominent on such songs as “New Life” and “Just Can't Get Enough.” Rhino titled its '80s series after that last track, and the synthesizer work Depeche Mode pioneered here made the quartet major players throughout the decade. The 2006 remaster of SPEAK & SPELL adds several bonus tracks (including great B-sides like “I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead”), and today we'll let it speak for founding vocalist Dave Gahan in honor of his birthday.

Dirt (Album of the Day)
Friday, May 6, 2016
Paul Kelly – not to be confused with the Australian singer-songwriter – came up through the Miami R&B scene of the mid-1960s and by the end of the decade had begun playing the kind of socially aware soul that Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Swamp Dogg specialized in. Kelly's moment of glory came with “Stealing In The Name Of The Lord,” a skeptical look at the church that became a Top 20 hit in 1970. It's the centerpiece of the performer's debut album for Happy Tiger, which was retitled and rereleased by Warner Bros. as DIRT. With additional songs including “What's Happenin' To Me And You” and “(He Ain't Nothin' But) Dirt” and strong arrangements with some ear-catching guitar licks, DIRT is a disc any fan of early-70s Southern soul-pop will dig.

Echo & The Bunnymen (Album of the Day)
Thursday, May 5, 2016
In the aftermath of their acclaimed OCEAN RAIN, Echo & The Bunnymen spent a year on hiatus before returning with their eponymous 1987 album, and the time off served them well. The collection features leaner arrangements than its string-laden predecessor, and the hooks stand out sharper than ever on such songs as “Bedbugs and Ballyhoo,” “The Game” and the classic “Lips Like Sugar.” A Top 10 hit in the band's native U.K. (and their most successful release in the U.S.), ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN would prove the final studio album from the core quartet of vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, bassist Les Pattinson and drummer Pete de Freitas, and today we'll give the set another spin in honor of McCulloch's birthday.

The Complete Bearsville Album Collection (Album of the Day)
Wednesday, May 4, 2016
Foghat began when frontman “Lonesome” Dave Peverett, bassist Tony Stevens and drummer Roger Earl split from British blues rockers Savoy Brown and recruited Black Cat Bones axeman Rod Price. Beginning with an eponymous 1972 album, the band spent more than a decade on Bearsville Records, scoring major success both with studio albums and a hit live set – all of which can be heard on the new THE COMPLETE BEARSVILLE ALBUM COLLECTION. These 13 remastered discs feature some of the tastiest boogie rock of the 1970s, including “I Just Want To Make Love To You,” “Stone Blue,” “Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool)” and the immortal guitar heroics of “Slow Ride.” Perhaps the U.K.'s answer to ZZ Top, Foghat served up music that was deceptively simple but reliably entertaining, and THE COMPLETE BEARSVILLE ALBUM COLLECTION captures them at their peak.
