The Replacements

The Replacements' third album for Sire, DON’T TELL A SOUL, marked the debut of Minneapolis axeman Slim Dunlap as a full-time member of the band. The collection is among the 'Mats' most accessible, thanks to the commercial polish added by producer Matt Wallace; the set's “I'll Be You” proved to be the group's sole Billboard-charting single. Like the other tracks on the 1989 set, it was penned by frontman Paul Westerberg, whose reputation as one of rock's greatest songwriters is borne out by such highlights as “Achin' to Be,” “Talent Show” and “Rock 'n' Roll Ghost.” A mature, sometimes melancholy album, the underrated DON’T TELL A SOUL is another strong Replacements set, and we'll give it another spin to wish guitarist Dunlap a happy birthday.
