Now Available: Scala & Kolacny Brothers, Solstice

If you aren’t familiar with Scala & Koalcny Brothers, then it’s time to change that. After all, they’re celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, so it’s not like they haven’t been around long enough for you to notice them. As it happens, though, their new album, Solstice, is so musically diverse that it’s really about as strong an entry point into their catalog as you could hope to find.

First, a quick bit of back story for those of you who are new to the group, brothers Steven and Stjin Kolacny hail from Belgium, Scala is the name of their choir, and with Steven on piano and Stjin conducting, they are seemingly unafraid to cover any song that’s suggested to them. The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry”? Done. Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”? Bring it on! Muse’s “Survival” followed by Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana”? You’re damned right.

All of the aforementioned songs feature on Solstice, along with versions of songs by Eurythmics, John Legend, Dave Matthews Band, Kate Bush, Queen, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails, Sheryl Crow, Green Day, Britney Spears, Genesis, Phil Collins, the Boomtown Rats, and Soundgarden. See what we mean? They’re absolutely fearless when it comes to the songs they cover and the order in which they cover them.

You can find the track listing below – yes, that’s right: it’s 20 tracks for 20 years! – and you can purchase a copy today, since Solstice is in stores now. Oh, and just one last thing: the album’s title might be named for the longest day of the year, but when you hit “play” on this album, you’ll find that the time will fly by. It’s just that good.
