Out Now: Jethro Tull, HEAVY HORSES: NEW SHOES EDITION

If you want conclusive proof that time flies, dig this statistic: this year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Jethro Tull’s first single, “Sunshine Day,” which was released on MGM Records. It’s an impressive anniversary by most anyone’s standards, and that’s why we’re planning to make the most of this notable accomplishment, starting with the 40th anniversary reissue of the band’s 1978 album HEAVY HORSES, a limited-edition 3-CD/2-DVD box set that’s been dubbed the NEW SHOES EDITION.

In addition to the CDs and DVDs, the set also includes a 96-page book featuring some decidedly impressive liner notes, including track by track annotation by Ian Anderson, lyrics for the songs from the original album as well as for the bonus tracks, interviews with studio engineer Colin Leggett and musicians Maddy Prior and Darryl Way, and a recording and touring chronology of the band from January 1977 through November 1978.

Yes, yes, we know: you want to know more about what’s on the CDs and DVDs. In addition to the original album, there are nine bonus tracks, seven of which are previously unreleased, there’s a concert recording from May 1978, and the DVDs offer the original, bonus, and live tracks mixed to surround sound.

Here’s the full track listing for your reading enjoyment, and for your listening enjoyment… Well, the NEW SHOES EDITION is in stores now, so go grab a copy and get to listening!
