Single Stories: Cher, “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me”

Nine years ago this week, Cher released the single that would go on to top the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart and – in doing so – became the first artist ever to top a Billboard chart in each of the past six decades.

Written by Diane Warren and produced by Matt Serletic and Mark Taylor for the original motion picture soundtrack of Burlesque, “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” had a title which was absolutely perfect for Cher, whose chart presence has become so ubiquitous over the course of her career that it would be hard for anyone to imagine a world without her. Despite the song’s title, Cher mentioned in a 2010 interview that it “reminded me that I have to kind of move over,” though she added to the Fresno Bee, “Not that I’m doing it gracefully, because you’d have to pull me over kicking and screaming.”

As it happens, Cher hadn’t been on the big screen for awhile at that point, so the fact that Burlesque was her first film in several years made the movie – and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” – a pretty big deal, and it showed in the song’s success. It should also be noted that, in addition to its appearance on the soundtrack, the tune also turned up on Cher’s next studio album, CLOSER TO THE TRUTH, where it found even more fans.
